Longer nights, warmer weather and boat cruises on Lake Michigan…Welcome to Festival Season in Chicago!
Love it or hate it Miller Coors Blue Moon, from a beer perspective is probably the most popular gateway drug in America. Above all its peers this mass produced 5.4 % abv witbier is the commodity of a multinational marketing company that really does take an honest approach toward introducing the masses to what beer can be.
On the Chicago Beer Pass podcast we explore how beers like Three Floyds Dark Lord sometimes serve as an entry point on the opposite end of the spectrum. But there’s no denying that brews like Blue Moon and Goose Island 312 are the most common portal for casual beer fans to consider making the transition into the world of craft beer.
I’m really trying not to ramble.. this is me just setting up the evening for you. Although we were looking for gin, or bourbon to potentially pair with the beer offerings. It was Blue Moon and it’s 5 variants that were the feature showcase on this Mystic Blue Cruise from Navy Pier.
Originally called Bellyslide Belgian White, it was created by Keith Villa, a brewer at Coors Field’s Sandlot Brewery (the onsite brewery at the home of the Colorado Rockies). Since it’s debut on 1995 Blue Moon Belgian Style Wit has won 6 World Beer Cup medals. My favorite dish on the cruise was Penne Aurora -Imported Penne Noodles tossed with Plum Tomatoes and Pecorino Romano Cream Sauce.
There are 5 full moons from now until boat season ends in late October. (5/14, 6/12, 7/12, 8/10, and 9/8) The Blue Moon cruise plans on setting sail for all of them. Quite honestly this is why I thoroughly enjoy partying with these cats. It’s not about catering to a particular crowd. It’s about partnering an artfully crafted evening of food, music and beer under the world’s illest skyline with Spotify. The popular music streaming service enlisted the help of the rock band Moon Taxi to perform on the 2nd level of the boat. It made the 3hr voyage on our vessel under the honey, champagne colored moon that much more enjoyable.
